I feel like we have had this project assigned for such a long time and now it’s due in a week (well if you want extra points, which I do so we are going to try to have it done for the fourth).

We originally want to have the podcast recorded before thanksgiving break so that a) we wouldn’t have to worry about it this week and b) so we would have enough time to edit it on garageband. Unfortunately for us, the plan didn’t work since the two people we are having in our round table discussion weren’t able to get together with us. So now the plan is to get together Thursday afternoon before one of our classes and sit down for an hour to record this podcast.

Unfortunately the responsibility of researching and writing the introduction and conclusion of the podcast as well as all of the questions, has fallen on me and I barely enough time to eat and sleep this week. So my plan is to write out the introduction and conclusion tonight and tomorrow morning so that way we will be all set for Thursday and then Alvin can edit the recording and we can get it submitted by Sunday.

I know that this project is supposed to be a pretty laid make assignment so I am not too worried yet about the process of getting it done. I’m hoping that on Thursday we will be able to have a good discussion regarding our topic and get everything we need recorded in order to eliminate any stress about other things we have to do for other classes. I think that once all of the writing is done the recording will be pretty easy and hopefully lead to a successful end product!

Silver Lining

A week is gone and I have now returned from my thanksgiving break. Understandably for the past week I have not had the chance to post anything on my blog since I was busy spending time with family and friends. However, I had an amazing time getting to meet up with friends I haven’t seen in the past three months, hanging out with family on thanksgiving day, and getting to step away from the hustle and bustle of college living.

…but a week is only so long and now it is time to get back to work for these last three weeks of school before I am off for winter break! While I am happy that I only have to get through two weeks more of classes and one week of finals, the days leading up to the end are going to be some of the busiest I’ve ever had with essays, podcasts, projects, garments, and plastic objects all due in less than two weeks. So in order to keep my sanity (which I can already feel slipping) I am going to go out of my way to post every day of December until the end of the semester about one thing that makes me happy. With thanksgiving having just passed and Christmas just around the corner, I think that this is the perfect time to remember the things that make us happy:) Wish me luck in tackling these last few weeks of my first semester of college!

A Much Needed Break

I’m so glad the week has come and I have the opportunity to hang out with my family and relax! I know that as soon as I get back to school I will be super busy with final projects, papers, and exams, but for the time being it is nice to not have to worry about any of that for a week. These past two days I have been able to hang out exclusively with my family, and I am excited to be able to get together with my friends in the next coming days before thanksgiving.

Also, I am very excited to be able to spend time with my dog, Rocky! Here are some pictures:)

Here’s to the week to come!

Wood Shop Wonder

Okay so it’s not perfect but this is the project I have been working on for the last few days for my design 101 class in the wood shop. I’m pretty proud of how it came out. I have never worked with wood before this class so this whole experience was very new to me. I thought it was kind of exciting getting to step out of my comfort zone for a little bit and do something that I have never done before. I used the table saw, the band saw and all of the sanders in the shop to create this stand to hold my partner’s plastic object and I have to say that it worked out pretty well. Though the professors had some comments during the critique, I think he thought my stand was crafted pretty well. I am definitely ready to take a break for a little though. This week has been a little nuts in the design world, and I think everyone needs some time to recharge before we get launched into the final weeks of the semester. Only 2 days until I am home!

Here is a picture of the wooden stand I constructed:

Post #15: Reaction to presentation day 1

Now that everyone in the class has done research on their chosen discourse community, we have begun presenting our ideas to the class via a presentation called an artifact gallery. For this artifact gallery we picked four or five different genres from our community and talked about how these genres relate to our community and what purpose it serves. With my chosen community of WGI, I showed images of a score recap sheet, a newsletter, a flyer, part of their website and their program book from the 2016 world championships. I think that my presentation went very well, and I think that there will be a lot of material I can work with when it comes time to write my report in the following weeks.

As for the presentations from the rest of the class, I thought that everyone did a very good job as well. I noticed that everyone seemed to have put a lot of thought into their chosen community and did a good job researching different genres that they could incorporate into their final report. I liked how a lot of my classmates chose a community that they are a part of or feel passionate about. By doing this, I felt that in their presentations they were much more interested in the topic and were therefore able to speak more passionately and freely about what their plans are for tackling the community project.

I think it is important for us to choose a community that we are a part of or have some connection with. Not only will this make it easier for us to research information about it, but it will make the overall writing process easier. I’m interested in seeing how this project comes out in the end, and I hope that by choosing a community that I love being a part of, the writing process won’t be as difficult.

Thanksgiving Plans

ONE WEEK. One week left until I go home for thanksgiving! I can’t wait to see my family and friends and have a chance to relax without having to worry about school. So, because I am so excited I figured I would make a list of all the things I am looking forward to doing over my week long break.

  1. See my dog! (If you could’t already tell from my blog post about my dog, Rocky, I miss him very much)
  2. Go out to lunch with my mom and get to talk to her face to face as opposed to on the phone
  3. Play video games with my dad, something that we did a lot over the summer, trying to see who could finish a game faster
  4. Hang out with my sister since I feel like I didn’t have much time to hang out with her for the two days I saw her over parent’s weekend
  5. Meet up with my group of friends, called the Breakfast Bunch, and have a fun time going out to eat, and in addition to this my friend group, called C4
  6. See one of my best friends who goes to Temple University
  7. See all my friends for that matter
  8. See the marching band’s show on thanksgiving and see guard friends and staff members that I have missed dearly
  9. Get ready to host thanksgiving at our house, even though my mom is going to be super stressed out about it
  10. Get a haircut (I really need one:))
  11. Sleeping in my own bed in my own room with no roommates!
  13. Blasting music/listening to music without earbuds/getting to sing out loud
  14. Setting up for Christmas the day after thanksgiving
  15. Not having to worry about homework/school work for a short amount of time
  16. Getting to drive again/getting to go to different places
  17. Seeing my extended family over thanksgiving and getting to tell them about how I am liking college so far (also show them pictures of the dresses I have made along with the skirt and jeans-which I am currently working on- I made for class)

Needless to say I am looking forward to a lot of things over thanksgiving break, and I am glad I only have to wait one more week before I can do them all! 🙂

Some astronomy for you

Since I was little I have always been fascinated with the planets, stars and space in general.  Last year during my senior year of high school I had the opportunity to take an astronomy elective and that passion that I had when I was little rekindled itself. Since then I have been interesting in all things astronomy, paying attention to cosmic events, updates in the field, and star and constellations in general.

So I just wanted to tell everyone out there that this Monday night not only will there be a full moon, but it will be a supermoon (when the moon is extra close to Earth) that is the brightest we have seen in half a century! It’s sure to be a cool sight so make sure to check it out!

Also if you like astronomy as much as I do, here a link to the astronomy picture of the day from NASA, a picture of the Great Rift near the center of the Milky Way.

From Needles to Nails

So far this year my primary focus has been on work on the 7th floor of the warehouse for my chosen major of fashion design. However, that changed today.

In my design 101 class I am now beginning to work in the wood and plastic shops, which means my new tools are going to become sanders and saws rather than sewing machines and sergers. For our first project we have been partnered off and the person in the plastic shop will create an object that is relational to the body (similar to the charrette project I talked about in an earlier post) and the person in the wood shop will create a stand for that object. I have been chosen as the wood maker for this project and will therefore be creating a stand for my partner’s object. He is thinking of creating a piece that engages the chin and then attaches to the wearer’s ears, while I am thinking of creating a “U” shaped stand to mimic the curvature of a chin.

Thankfully, the last two classes our professor has given us an in-depth tour of the tools in the shop and how to be safe while operating them. Today, was the first time we got to try cutting on the table saw. After we were cleaning up he asked me if I was in Industrial Design or Comm Design and was surprised when I said I was in fashion. He then told me that he was very impressed by the confidence I expressed in operating the machinery. I was very flattered by the compliment and I hope that I will be able to continue with that confidence as I move forward in my wood project:)

From the second my writing 105 teacher announced our next project for our new section on community, I knew exactly what community I was going to write about.

Now that we have moved in to our third unit of writing 105, we have begun examining what is means to be part of a community. We have read articles, down activities in class, and discussed criteria, now it is time for the project. For this project, we will be selecting one community to examine and go in depth on their goals, lexis (or language that they use) and genres. In the end we will be able to construct an eight pages project surrounding this community and how it functions. With this in mind I know exactly the community I wanted to tackle for this project: color guard.

More specifically, I chose to propose that I research the WGI, or Winter Guard International, community which is the organization that all well known winter guards are part of. For three years of high school, I participated in this amazing community on an amazing team that taught me things about discipline and hard work that I will take with me for the rest of my life. Though I am still considered part of the community now since I was a member of a team that participated through WGI, I miss being out on the floor spinning my heart out and giving it my all. Naturally, with my love for this amazing sport, I chose WGI as my community since my experience with winter guard has shaped so much of who I am today. I hope that in the future, whether it is a marching band over the summer or an independent winter guard next winter, I will get back out on that floor and shine under those bright lights again!

Here’s a picture of my rocking my solo last year:)

Fashion show pictures

I just realized this morning that though I mentioned that the fashion show I participated in over parents weekend was successful, I never showed any pictures of the dresses that I made! As mentioned before, the theme of the show was world cultures and I chose the country of Greece to design for. Due to my love for Greek mythology I inspired my dresses around the gods, specifically the big three (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades-though he is not part of the 12 olympians). In making the dresses I took into consideration styles of ancient Greek attire as well as color schemes surrounding each of the gods. I’m very proud with how they came out in the end, and even though it was a little crazy being that busy working on the pieces, I miss being able to dive in to those projects that I was doing just for myself and not for a specific class or grade. I hope that come the spring semester we can have another fashion show!
